93 / 120HP Force tilt - trim problems

Im looking for help and getting discouraged quick. I just bought a 93 Maxum with the above motor 120HP Force.

First few times out tilt worked but would fall under load while trying to trim up - dock and idle no problem (3 ram system)

Now the boat motor won't tilt without help / someone pressing the trim switch and lifting the motor. When you trim down while holding the motor there is literally no pressure. This is an Eaton Pump/motor

I took the boat into a local shop and the guy said I need a pump kit part #811702, guess what it's obsolete. 100 bucks later I sill have a system that doesn't tilt. He said the motor was fine. I asked him if he thought I should replace the manifold kit #823085 and he said NO. I just wish I could pull off the eaton motor and send it out for a rebuild but all the hydrolic shops aren't interested.

I called another shop and they said to buy a entire new pump/motor kit part #853515A1 - that's over 900 bucks. I'm starting to think this is a lost cause so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 93 / 120HP Force tilt - trim problems

Hi J.

Been there before. There are many on this site that can and will help you, as they did me.

I actually bought a new pump (although in the end, I dont think I really needed it) but my problem was the O-ring on the piston in the trim ram. It had blown a half inch chunk out and there was no way my system (even with the new pump) was going to lift my motor. I had problems pulling out the 5 bolts that hold the 2 halves of the housing together and I had to go for a drive to the dismantlers and buy another housing.

Anyway, replaced the housing, new o-rings for the trim and the tilt ram, refill with 32 weight hydraulic oil, beautiful.

Be really careful pulling those 5 bolts out. Plenty of anti-sieze spray and very slowly. back them out an 1/8 of a turn spray and nip them back up again. Back them out a bit further spray again and nip them up an 1/8 again. Keep going like this untill you can take them out the rest of the way by finger.

Good luck.

Hey J.

Reading your post, I could feel your frustration, since I've been through the exact same issue. I posted on here and was helped by another memeber, RRitt. Here's the link to the posts that I started last year regarding this issue. I honestly don't remember the rebuild much, but I do know it was very straight forward.

Good Luck.

Re: 93 / 120HP Force tilt - trim problems

So I ordered the trim ram rebuild kit from RRIt in eBay and have the trim ram off the boat but how do I remove the piston from the ram to change the piston o-ring? Do I hammer the piston out? I'm stuck.

Remove the 5 screws and cap, cover and hold the ram with a shop towel (so the piston doesn't fly acroos the room) and apply light air pressure to the bottom oil line port and she will pop right out.

Hey I'm just curious as to what type of shift controls do you have?

usually the trim piston will come right out with the cover if you disconnect the tube at pump. If you don't disconnect oil tube then it is very difficult to get out. Take care not to angle piston and score the inside of cylinder wall. If the aluminum shows through anodizing then you need new cylinder insert.

The '93 tilt ram is not rebuildable. The top cover uses a metric wiper that has to be custom made. So just use your tilt and shock until they wear out. When they do wear out, replace them with Chrysler Force style.
