93 175 fast strike oil injection

Afternoon all,

My 175HP fast strike is running well and I am still learning it as I go. I have no alarms and just want to be sure that my oil injection system is working. I emptied the oil tank of whatever the previous owner had in there just to be starting with a clean slate. I filled mine with new 2 stoke Evinrude oil. I put a piece of tape on the oil tank where the oil level was after I filled it so I could see if the level was changing. Aside from this tape method, is there another way of making SURE the oil injection system is working? I am trying to make sure everything is working fine.
Last question, on my boat dash I have an aerator switch. I know years ago my father on his OMC I/O he would always run this aerator for a couple minutes before starting the engine if we sat for awhile fishing. What does this do for me? If I didn't run the aerator before starting and taking off, what would happen?

Thanks

Sid

Well, Now that you have introduced air into the oil supply line, you will likely have issues. You must run 50::1 premixed fuel until you verify the oil injection pump is working. Disconnect the oil line from the VRO pump (motor off), pump oil primer bulb until you see oil w/o bubbles. Now connect to VRO Pump and prime once more. Now mark oil level on reservoir and run a tank or two of premix fuel and note oil level or just refill. It should take a pint (6gal) or 1 qt (12 Gal) of premix fuel. If the oil usage is correct, you may trust the oil injection again.

Your father likely ran his bilge blower a while. I doubt you will have one on an OB powered boat.

Yep, on an I/O you have a bilge BLOWER to purge the bilge of gas fumes. An AERATOR pumps air into a livewell so the fishies can breathe.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply. Barnegat huh? Born and raised up in Matawan, Monmouth county. Anyway, you say I introduced air into the oil injection system. I used a siphon to pull what I could out of the oil tank until the siphon could get no more. I am sure there was some left in there though in the hard to get spots. I completely filled the tank back up before I started the motor though. Do you think I still got air in there? I would still like to verify the system with this primer bulb method though. After I remove the oil line from the VRO pump, where would I find the oil primer bulb at? Are you referring to the fuel primer bulb that I pump up before starting? My gas tank is about close to empty or about a 1/4 tank. Will I still need to run a tank or two of 50:1 pre-mix if I get oil to come out with no bubbles?

What would be some signs of the oil injection system not working if I did allow air into the system? Wouldn't my alarm system sound if it were not working?

Thanks

Sid

Sid, I do not know if you have the no oil alarm on your motor. It may be too old for that. I don't know if you introduced air into the fuel line, but you do not want to take chances. The oil line should have a primer bulb near the oil reservoir. I would mark the oil tank level and fill your main fuel tank with premix and run it a few days. If the oil level in the tank drops the proper amount, you are probably good to go.

Thanks Chris,

I do have the alarm system. I will look for the oil primer bulb tonight. I will mix up a tank of 50:1 and run it like you suggest. If the oil pump is working correctly at the same time I run 50:1 pre-mix, is it bad for the motor to get TOO much oil then? Lastly, I am supposed to prime the oil pump every time I start like I do the fuel primer bulb? Even after sitting on the lake for a couple of hours of fishing? Is there a sequence to which you prime first?

Thanks a ton Chris.

Chris,

I do have the alarm system on my engine. If the oil pump is working and doing its job, is it bad to get TOO much oil to the motor as I am introducing 50:1 through the fuel tank as well? Also, should I prime the oil pump everytime I start like I would the fuel primer bulb? Is there a sequence to which you prime first?

Thanks

Sid
