Afternoon all,

Its been a few months since I've started the motor. It starts right up when using the choke and idles fine at about 1300rpm. After about a few minutes it will drop down to 1000rpm or so. For some reason I remember dropping lower. Does 1000rpm at idle in neutral sound right?

Second, what should I be reading at the batteries for a charge voltage? A volt or 2 more than the base battery voltage?

Lastly, upon the first startup the temp gauge came right up after warming up to about 160 or so. Shut it down. Did a couple things. Then started it back up and the gauge goes to 120 and stops and will not move past there. Is there a sending unit or something that sends a signal to my gauge? How can I tell if its my gauge or the sending unit?

Thanks

Sid

The proper way to check the idle speed is to have it in the water and in forward gear. Get a cheap temp gun to check your motor temp.

Thanks Boobie. Its be a long wait for a reply. Its only suiting you'd be the one who steps up.

Let me ask you another question please if I may while I have your ear.

I just last year replaced the the OEM 35amp water cooled regulator rectifier with a CDI part # 193-4093. Mt tach was not working and the batteries were not charging. After the replacement, all was well. this spring just a few weeks ago I started the motor up to get it ready for the lake. Mind you, I've been starting it on and off in our NC winter months. Now it seems when I start it up, and it does start right up, the tach will not work right away. Maybe 3 - 5 minutes into idle it decides to come alive. When I shut the key off, the tach will stay where it was idling last. Say 1100 rpm. Turn the key on, it jumps to zero and then operates when I start the motor. Tach appears to work showing 1100rpm at idle and will move up in rpm when I accelerate in neutral. All this time though, if I put a digital multimeter on my batteries, I show 12.6 - 12.7 volts. Just a few tenths more than base battery voltage.

Should I be seeing more battery voltage when running? I cleaned every battery lead and contact. I cleaned the two purple and gray wires bullet leads coming from the regulator. I cleaned the two yellow leads coming from the stator to the regulator. Looking for maybe corrosion over the winter. The only thing I have not cleaned is the hot lead going to the side of the starter solenoid and also the mounting of the regulator to the engine case ground.

What do you think is up? I'm thinking my tach should work right away when starting and not take 5 min to start towork. I'm also thinking I should see more voltage at the battery when running for charging. Like maybe 13 or so.

Thanks again Boobie for the reply and enjoy the rest of your Memorial day weekend sir.

Sounds like your having some issues again, need to run some tests on the stator and rectifier to see if they are working, you might have a rectifier going bad on your again.

A couple things that will cause reliability issues with those motors. You need a 1000MCA battery, smaller ones will start your motor but will lead to electrical issues like your having. Two use the Champion QL78YC spark plugs, do not substitute. If you look at the paperwork that came with your CDI parts it will tell you the same thing. Three the was a service bulliten on those motors in the mid 90s requiring the spark plug wires to be changed to a new style. Look at your spark plug wire, if they are black the need to be changed to the gray ones. CDI sells an inductive spark plug wire set, best place to get the new wires.

Minimum battery is 750CCA and the 1000CCA is for Fichts. It sounds like it a OMC tach and its sticking, as for charging that unit must been old stock as the new one do not use the purple wire. The purple wire turns the unit on and off and sounds like its not working correctly..

Thanks guys. I am using the correct Champion plugs. However, the wires are the black colored ones. I am not sure what "FICHTS" means. I do not remember what the CCA is on the batteries. I'll check in the morning. I believe they are 850, but not sure. What should I be seeing as far as a charge voltage at the battery?

Thanks

You should see around 14 volts at the battery when running around 2000 rpm.

Well that's certainly not happening. I'm seeing max 12.6. I'll have to look into this starting with some tests.

Thanks Boobie.
