Hey guys I was looking at my dad's 40 that on his pontoon boat and it looks like water got in the bottom end and froze over the winter and popped out the nylon retaining nut and propshaft. could I just buy a seal kit and new nylon nut. Or will there be much more damage that what I think. I've done a heap of lower units on smaller merc ie 9.8's 7.5's etc. But nothing in the 40 hp range. The housing is not cracked. I just want to know if it's worth spending more money or find a complete bottom end.

If these is no signs of damage to the lower unit housing, I would pull it apart and clean, lube and check everything completely, then put back together and make sure it is sealed correctly, then run it a day or two and drain the oil and replace. I would want to know if there is any rusty stuff in there, so I would think a complete tear down of the lower unit is in order. If there is no major rust in there, then yes, it is worth rebuilding. If you have done lower units on the smaller motors with forward and reverse you should be able to do this with very little problem.

eyeball. if you have done lower end work before it should be No big Deal. But then again, You Won't Know until you tear in to it. That's the fun of it.
