I have a chance to pick up a 93-4 Johnson 40hp. The owner says it leaks a little oil out the shaft. Any tips on how to change out, and what else to look for? What air presure to test? I've done a number of MC outdrives over the years. Do I check the water pump while I'm there? Or can I just pull the bearing carrier out & go from there?

The pressure, vacuam test is 15#. If you are only going to change the prop shaft seal, you don't need to remove the gearcase, just the bearing carrier. Most time's all the seal's are changed at once. If only the prop shaft seal is leaking, this will get you by for awhile.

And yes, change the water pump impeller unless the previous owner has recently had it replaced. Generally, the pump is replaced about every three years...regardless of use.
