Re: 93' 70 h.p. Johnson

It was a great engine in '93, Spy. What it is now depends on the care it has had.

If you have the opportunity, do the following (in order of importance).

1. On the water demonstration. Engine should start promptly, idle well, accellerate smoothly and run at WOT for several minutes without overheating.

2. Compression test. All three should be over 100psi and within 10psi of each other.

3. Inspect gearcase oil. Should be dark, not milky. No water in gearcase.

4. Inspect sparkplugs. Should be tan, with little or no deposits. None should "clean as a hound's tooth".

An engine that passes all of the above is in excellent shape.

An engine that passes 2,3, and 4 is probably fine.

Good luck. :)
