93 88HP Overheat while peeing??

I have a 1993 Evinrude 88SPL. Was doing tune up in the yard yesterday with muffs. It has been about one year since I ran teh motor but it started right up with fresh fuel.

Water return at top of motor started peeing within 4 or 5 seconds. After idling about 4 or 5 minutes, warning horn started sounding and water peeing was very hot (almost scalding). I shut it off before it really overheated.

Since water is peeing, i assume impeller is working? Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing the overheat?

prob from using the muffs for too long,5 min,,you might have to test that on some real water,lake ,river,,,,if it still runs hot and is indeed pumping,,you might have some blockage in there somewhere,,,exhaust or cooling ports

running on muffs has nothing to do with it. you can run all day on muffs. your thermostat has failed. they are a pita to get to. between the cylinder heads, down in the cowl, you will see 2 hoses, one from each head. the tstats are in that housing the hoses go it.

Once the horn sounds, the overheating has already taken place, so you should plan on replacing the cylinder head gaskets. You can check the water passage deflectors while you are at it because they may be at least part of the problem.
