the boat is a 17 foot .the plate says 4 persons / 70 HP. but is that the recommended? would a 120 horse be to big? or what can it handle?

A bigger motor than the recomended will get you a ticket. It's also dangerous
to excede the HP rating.Buy a bigger boat.J

WOW I have a 86 Bayliner1600 and the cap plate says 5person or 750lbs at 90HP max. How is it a larger boat with smaller numbers???

Its not only size, but the construction, hull shape and design, weight distribution, etc.

If the manufacturer says 70, then 70 it is.
