93 carver 300 fuel usage

We own a 93 carver 300 and have extremely good fuel consumption while cruising from 5 to 7.5 knots....approx. 3.5 gallons per hour per engine. The 350 crusaders run really well, and when we want to it gets going in a hurry.

That being said, I hear we may do equally well by being up on plain and backing it off once up there...standard cruising/operating procedure but have yet to do this.....owning a boat is not about cost of fuel, just not really keen on filling it up all the time for obvious reasons.

Looking for any answers/advice on this usage method as opposed to just simply slow mode.

I can only tell you what I've read on the boards, not having installed a fuel flow meter as of yet. Running at 'hull speed' which should be around 8 knots will give you the most efficient fuel flow at around 1 1/2 miles per gallon. The quicker you run, the more fuel consumed and at just up on plane you'd drop down to around 1/2 mile per gallon. Pushing the rpms it gets worse from there. Basically it becomes a trade off between time vs fuel cost. If you've got lots of time and can get there slowly, it'll cost you the least. If your time is limited and you need to cruise there in a jiffy, it's gonna cost you more.
