93 E115TLETS Electrical question...

I finally got my 93 E115TLETS to start. When i put it on my boat last week I used the old controls and wiring from my 82 evinrude 115.

It will not start with the 1 pin black/yellow off the powerpack connected. It will start with it unplugged, but the key will not shut off the motor...nothing to ground it out.

Does this motor have to have a safety cut-off switch? Is this just a matter of having a short somewhere?

The powerpack is brand new...30 minutes of runtime on it out of water. Johnson/Evinrude part; not aftermarket.

7 day old keyswitch...correct Evinrude/Johnson part for this year.

I have to choke it out with the primer solenoid to kill the engine. The guy I bought it from had to do the same thing. I just figured he had a short somewhere.

Short of "does this need a safety kill?"...I don't feel it is an electrical problem between the motor and keywsitch.

Another forum told me to check my safety cut-off, but again I don't have one. Also told me to check my key switch, but it is new.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 93 E115TLETS Electrical question...

From the factory parts list, it shows that the 82 control box does have a lanyard cutoff switch. Perhaps your control box is older than you think. The 81 boxes do not have the lanyard cutoff.. You can check out the factory parts list for various control boxes at: epc.brp.com. It is always possible that the black wire with the yellow tracer is going to ground, causing the no spark condition. You can run a new (substitute) wire in place of the old black/yellow for testing purposes-from the control box to the power pack. See what happens.
