93 Evinrude 40 hp horn sounding non-stop

I used my boat all day yesterday no problem...went to crank it to load and the horn was sounding continuously. It is nonstop with the ignition key in the on position where it should normally provide a short beep. Any suggestions? Oil tank is full and I assume all is working properly motor-wise...

Additionally, I checked the main plug terminals at the red harness. I disconnected the brown wire from the oil tank and the horn stopped. Is this a good indication that the problem is with the tank sending unit? Thanks for any assistance...

From what I have read on this site a continuously buzzer is a water temp problem.

I had the same problem on a oil tank. My float was set a haft tank of oil to alarm try filling the tank with more oil and reconnect the wire and see if the buzzer shuts off. Also you can remove the float and slide the small washer that gives the alarm up then turn on key and see if it will stop

Re: 93 Evinrude 40 hp horn sounding non-stop

Ok here goes.....I have isolated the oil tank and it is checking properly with an ohm meter (open line). However, i can disconnect the tan wire or the black wire going to the oil tank and the constant horn stops. There is no continuity from tan to ground from the oil tank. There IS continuity to ground from the black wire that the oil tank black wire connects to. There is no continuity between the tank brown and black wire. So I assume the tank sender is doing its job. By the way the tank is full as I previously posted. I cannot put anymore oil in this tank. There is no continuity to ground from either side of the temp sensors' plugs. Im starting to think I may have a bad ignition switch. I get no continuity from the ignition switch black wire (which leads to the horn black) and the brown terminal on the horn. So where is this thing grounding out? This is frustrating! I get a voltage reading between the brown and purple (hot) lead (at the horn) of twelve volts so I assume that the brown lead is grounding but im not getting continuity to ground at this brown lead.....what gives?????

Oil tank sensor (micro processor) has probably succumbed to water.
Your options are... buy a new one if still available.
Buy the new style which is just a switch (no more micro processor)
or leave it disconnected and fill tank more often.

Thanks marinemech. However, the tank is checking out fine with the ohmmeter. There is no continuity between the wires leading to it and that, to my understanding of this system, is how it should be when the tank is full.

The problem is its got a chip in (micro processor) it not a switch so ohm meter test not reliable.

I agree but again you have a chip in there not a switch. Probably has water in it which may not show up on ohm meter.
And as you said earlier when you disconnect tank problem goes away.

p.s. the micro processor senders have been known to screw up.

So when disconnecting the tank leads am I breaking the loop to everything else? Do all of the other sensors work independantly of the tank when its disconnected?

Yes all other sensors (no oil and overheat) will still function normally. You can test no oil warning by doing the following... hook up to 50:1... disconnect oil hose... run motor fast idle (in water not on hose if on flusher IDLE ONLY) approx 5-10 minutes...no oil warning should start to sound(beep every 1\2 second)...reconnect and clamp oil hose...squeeze oil bulb until warning stops. Continue with 50:1 for a while usually 5 gal tank.

Thanks I will post the solution to this annoyance soon. Hopefully its just the tank.
