93 evinrude 9.9 lower unit install help please

Hey i have a 94 evinrude 9.9 and iam trying to intall the lower unit, i tried my manual and it says pull up on the gear case shift rod to put it in reverse and move the shift lever on the engine to reverse. reverse on the engine is pushing the lever on the engine back toward the engine ? Doing this the shift rod moves up into the lower cowl preventing me from conneting the lower unit to the engine, or should i push the lever on the away from the engine when i do the shift rod drops and i can connect the rods but would the bind up?

Hey,
There are two shift rods; one in the upper half of the engine, one in the lower unit. One of them will have a connector to splice them together. Depends on how you took it apart.
Push the upper shift rod down.
Pull the lower shift rod up.
Then you should be able to connect the two at the split.
No doubt it's a !$#@ to hook these up.
Take your time.

It helps to take a large flat blade screw driver and open the coupling ever so little. I also find it works best with the poser unit vertical rather than tipped up. Best of luck. Rick.
