About 3 months ago, I had a bad coil. I replaced it, engine ran well since then. Took the boat out last week, engine started a little rough.. While out on the water, the boat wouldn't start. I tapped the carbs.. and wah la, the boat ran.. I figured it was a stuck float.

Took the boat out yesterday, boat ran at the house.. got to the water, and nothing, would only start when I put it in gear. I messed around with the throttle linkage at the house and got it to start. I also pulled the top carb out and adjusted the float, it seemed to not be working right, it was holding a lot of gas.

Onwards to the Coils. As the boat was running, I pulled the coils one at a time. Only the Coil that was replaced was working..

My question is, how do I go from 3 coils working, to One?! Does it have anything to do with the control module? After I replace the two coils, should the boat be in good working order, or does it sound like I have more problems under the hood?

swap the coils position, and check. mark the good coil so you know it is good.

Coils are definitely bad. Only fires on the new coil.

If I am having a problem with the Power Pack (power output), then would it be the same scenario? Or am I looking at just bad coils? I know it is hard to tell over the inet...

I also have gas leaking out of the top carb. It is dripping out of the drain plug, and spitting out of the side - (from inside the float jet to the top side of the carb)

I am assuming it is time for a new carb. - float is not stuck btw

How do you know that the coils are bad if you have not swapped them? If the problem does not change after swapping the coils then suspect the power pack. If the good coil works no matter where you put it then suspect the other coils.

I have swapped the coils. Still the same scenario - new coil is the only one that fires.

My concern is that all 3 coils went bad for a reason, right?. Is this a problem solely with the coils, or with the power pack?

Re: 93 Evinrude Iginition Coils

The floats rise as the fuel pump fills the float bowls. When they reach the top they block the incoming fuel so that you don't flood the carburetors.

The float valve is supposed to stay closed until the engine pulls some fuel out of the bowl. Then the float drops and keeps the bowl full.

Please clarify, when you put the new coil on cylinders 1, 2, and 3, did each one fire?

Have you done a spark test with all the spark plugs removed?

I am testing spark with an actual spark tester now.

as far as the carbs go.. I understand what the float does.. but it is dripping out of the closed drain screw. and spitting out of the side.

Spark on top and middle cylinder. Move the new coil to the bottom cylinder and no spark.

Should I buy 2 coils anyway? Why are the coils going bad?

OK. have spark on all 3 cylinders. My problem is that the top cylinder is not getting fuel - the same cylinder that the Carb is spitting gas out of.

Re: 93 Evinrude Iginition Coils

Top cylinder still not getting fuel (pulled spark wire and no change in RPM) Middle cylinder, the engine stalls. Bottom cyl, the engine drops in RPM...

Yes it has spark..

Gas is no longer spitting out of the carb, I adjusted the Float.. it wasn't stuck, it needed to be raised, it was sitting low.

But no fuel = no oil = bad. = why would I not be getting gas to the top cylinder?

BTW, I put new Coils in- So now I am working with 3 brand new coils.

Re: 93 Evinrude Iginition Coils

The action of the piston pulls the fuel and air from the float bowl through the carburetor where it is scavenged into the firing chamber, so if the bowl is full and the carburetor is properly cleaned and synchronized, you either have a a reed problem or a fairly good air leak, provided the compression is even.

if the jet hose is split where it is connected to the carb, would that be a considerable leak for my problem? Or does it have to be something more severe than that?

Compression was good about 3 months ago.. 115-120 on all 3

Re: 93 Evinrude Iginition Coils

Cylinder firing as follows :

1) No Change when plug removed
2) Engine stalls when plug removed
3) RPM's drop when plug removed

Again, new coils, spark on all 3. Put new plugs in also (autolite brand, only brand that was in stock) will check tomorrow to see if plugs are fouled or not..The plugs that came out had oil around the threads.. didn't look too bad.

Re: 93 Evinrude Iginition Coils

Seems Like I only have 1 cylinder working properly.

What are my fixable options here?
