This engine started acting up two weekends ago.Up until then it was starting pretty easily as usual. When the problem started I could get it started by pushing the throttle down a 3rd of the way. She would fire up and run fine on the lake. This past weekend after starting it this way and running it around the lake, it died just as I got back to the dock. Now it won't start at all. Fuel doesn't seem to be a problem, as as I can smell it and see it in the water from the exhaust. I am a newbie to outboards but am ready to get to the bottom of this. Got my feet wet this winter by installing new water pump, new prop and performing a decarb.I bought a manual, and after reading some related posts and replies on this site, looks like I'll be purchasing some testing equiptment also. Any kind of guidance from you guys would be appreciated. Steve

First thing you might want to buy is a compression tester. They run about 30 bucks at Sears or at any auto store. Nice thing about these is you can use them on anything with a spark plug. Take your plugs out and verify each of them has a blackish oily look to them. Connect the wire to them and ground out the tips and crank it to see if you are getting spark on all the plugs. A good spark will be blue and give a pretty good crack. A yellow spark is a week spark and your problem is somewhere in your ignition system.

You might want to try taking your plugs out of the motor and leave them out for a day or so. Then install them and squirt some premix gas into the carbs and choke it and see if it starts or starts easier. You may still have a fuel related problem
