Previous owner claimed this is a fresh rebuild. One cylinder was bored and sleeved and all new pistons, rings, and bearings were installed on all 3 cylinders

I have verified compression :

#1 - 125
#2 - 120
#3 - 125

I have also verified that i have spark on all 3 cylinders. Right now it has NGK's for spark plugs. The dealer recommended Champions but we cross referenced and the NGK's are compatible.

Here's the kicker......i have also verified that i have FUEL to all 3 cylinders. I pulled the carbs and made sure the floats weren't stuck. I get fuel to all 3 cylinders.

The engine doesn't even try to start. If i mess with it for long enough it will sputter maybe once. Even at that point there is fuel in the bowls of all 3 carbs.

The only thing i haven't touched is the timing. At this point that is the only thing i can figure to be wrong.

WHere can i get some good informatino on timing online?

Any other ideas?

Does the choke work?
Are you using the choke?
Are you advancing the throttle when trying to start it?
Have you tried spraying some premixed fuel into the carb throats with a small spray bottle?
How long since it last ran?
Were the carbs rebuilt?
Fuel to the bowl doesn't mean fuel to the engine.

Have you checked the timing yet?
Thunderbolt ignition on that model, correct? 32* BTDC

- this motor doesnt have a traditional choke. It has some sort of solenoid that i assume shoots a spray of fuel into the cylinder. I took the return line off and hit the choke button and it does in fact spit some out.

- I have tried working the throttle with the same outcome.

It was running when i picked the engine up probably 2 months ago. The only thing that has happened in that time was transportation, and bolting it to my transom.

What makes me wonder about the timing is, when i bought the motor the mechanic was tinkering with the timing adjustment without having a light on it.

Do i check the timing on an outboard the same as a car? Clip the wire to #1 cylinder spark plug wire? I see the timing marks on the flywheel.

Your "choke" is called a fuel enrichment valve.
After you pump up the fuel line bulb, there is fuel pressure.
The enrichment valve will open, and remain open, as long as you push the key in.
The fuel will flow directly into the intake manifold behind the carbs.

Yes, that will work for timing check.
#1 cylinder is the top one.

So when i attempt to start should i be holding the key in all the time or will that flood the engine?

Should i just push it in once or twice and then try cranking, or hold it in while cranking until it fires?

Squeeze the bulb.
Advance the throttle.
Push and hold the key in while turning, until it fires, or tries to fire.
If it doesn't fire after 10 seconds, release the key, and try it without the choke.
