Well....since last time I post here...my '85 Merc 150 overheated on me and scorched the pistons. So for a few months I watched the local paper and finally found a '93 Johnson 150 and had it installed last week. The second trip out a loud rapping sound in the lower unit that left me stranded on the lake turned out to be chewed up gears. Some missing teeth and metal shavings all in the bearings.
My question is where is the best place (price) to purchase a gear set and should I replace all the bearings ...or just wash 'em out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
...some of us just have all the luck !

jinx, bad luck man. :(
you have 2 choices
1) buy a complete reman gearcase
2) do a complete rebuild on existing g/c. BTW, all seals, bearings and gears need to be replaced.

Re: '93 Johnson 150 Gear Failure

Thanks alot for the replys. I tried Shad for the gear set and I think I found the right ones, but it says '92-'93 OMC Cobra V-6. I don't know the term Cobra. #22690 gear set

Re: '93 Johnson 150 Gear Failure

The mechanic that installed it said it was a Fast Strike. I want to make sure I get the right seal kit and gear set. I don't understand why I can't just wash the bearings out with oil washer to remove the shavings ?? Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Re: '93 Johnson 150 Gear Failure

You should get the orignal OMC part number then cross to aftermarket, if you use aftermarket gears. You should be able to clean, dry, and inspect the bearings. The bearings could be fine or junk, depends on how long you run the engine after the gear went out. You can find photos of defective bearings in most OEM service manuals. A Cobra was an OMC sterndrive, and some of the parts were the same. I cant remember if this engine was a replacement for the GT/Extry Power series or not, but some of these engines had a different set of gears, the standard 150.

The engagemnt lug ramp angle is different on Cobra gears and clutch dog compared to the outboard gears and dogs. A set of Cobra gears installed in an outboard can cause the motor to be extremly hard to shift out of gear.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replys. I found another site that seems to be more clear with good prices. They sell on ebay. I will double check OEM numbers for the gear set and seal kit.
*link didn't work...have to go through ebay I guess.
web page
