Im back again. I cannot figure this carb issue out. I have adjusted every which way i can and this motor will not run right. It will run steady in a tub of water about 2 feet deep when i partially cover the carb with my hand as if i were choking it. When i take my hand off it dies. It has new plugs, good gas and good compression. Can anyone tell me how to set the carb if i screw in the adjustment screws all the way and start from scratch. I have checked the valves and they are clean as a whistle. Any suggestions before i take it to the shop and have them molest my wallet?

You can adjust it until the cows come home and if the carb is dirty, it won't run right. Only running on choke is a classic symptom of a dirty carb. A 2-stroke johnson carb is incredibly simple. Take it off, disassemble it, use a can of carb cleaner and clean out all the passages in your carb and put it back on. Lightly seat the low speed adjustment and back it out about 1 1/2 turns. Crank it and make your final adjustments. You should also check your spark with a spark tester on both wires. SOmetimes bad spark will closely resemble carb problems. Your motor I believe has the primer instead of a choke. Be sure you don't break any of the fragile plastic parts when removing the carb.

There are some different carbs out on that engine, some with a plastic cover and needle where the needle seat gets easily damaged and the cover has to be changed.
Then it is the 'old' all 'alu carb:

On this, remove the needle seat and front orifice (#1), get a can of choke and carb cleaner and spray through. Check that cleaner is coming out of the small holes behind the butterfly.
The adjustment screw(#14) on this carb is a fuel screw, more out= more fuel. Start by 2,5 out. When adjusting idle mix, be sure the butterfly is completely closed by loosening the link to the roller that opens the carb.
