I've got a 1993 Johnson 25 w/electric start. When I bought the motor, the gear on the starter was a relatively small 9-tooth F gear (correct me if i'm wrong, but it looks to me like all the worm-gear sections of the starter gear are the same, and the braze on different size pinions, stamped with letters?)...

My problem is this, the starter gear seemed to chatter a lot on the flywheel, and finally separated into two pieces.

When i went to get a new gear, the one the books list is a C gear (same gear pattern, but larger, 11 teeth). I got the new gear, but i'm still confused, it is a pretty hard-mount starter bracket, I don't see any way to shim it or anything to accomidate this larger pinion :-\

Any suggestions?

Any info would be appreciated...

Thanks :)

You shouldn't have to shim it, Phog. I've replaced several of those things and the replacement gear has gotta be the same, (9 teeth)as old one. They only show one part nr. for that pinyon and that's 0321648.
Hope this helps.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks for the response Hooty :)
I thought the same thing, and thats the same part # i came up with, but the gear that came from the parts distrib (in the 321648 bag) was the 11 tooth gear...I figured it was a mix-up at the parts place, but we tried again, same thing, and when we tried cross-referencing the gear with aftermarket places, they all called for the 11 tooth.
I dunno if it's a mistake in the OMC schematic or what, but i'll let ya know what happens :)
