I have a 1993 Mariah Diablo 18 foot outboard. I get a pretty strong gas smell in the boat while it is sitting on the trailer in the shed with a half full 23 gallon tank. I checked all the hoses and all clamp tightness. I wanted to pull the tank to check it but that looks like a real project. I thought it would come out through the gauge access hatch but after removing clamps and hoses, it looks like some of the floor would also have to be removed. Anyone got any good ideas? Thanks

could be just gas from the vent evaporating, if it is a closed shed.

gene, What is the tank made of? How old is it?

The next step is to pressure test it, while it is still in the boat. Plug the fuel pickup, keep the filler closed and pump 3-5 PSi into the vent line. See if it holds pressure for a while.'

It is better to pressure test the tank, when it is empty.

Chris, The tank is a 1992 Kracor Inc of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The material is shown as w/uvi (whatever the heck that is but it is some kind of plastic). It holds 23 gallons. I am making up the plugs to follow your suggestion of pressurizing it. The tank says 3psi max. May take me a few days before I can test it. Thanks for the reply!

Pressure test it to be sure, but I think TD is right. This is not a sealed system like on your car, and you have it in an enclosed space.
