Hello, fairly new to the site but I really appreciate any input I can get. I just bought a 93 Merc 9.9 for my little lobster fishing skiff and spent some money getting a new impeller/service overhaul (less the carb work) to make sure I started fresh with the maintenance.
After getting it back I took it out for a test run in the harbor and with a full choke it ran fine for a while then slowed a little and when taking off the choke it would run very sluggish. At idle with choke off it sputters out after a bit.
Now all indications lead to a gummed up carb if I'm not mistaken. Are there any cheaper ways to deal with the problem without having to spend $250 on a carb clean? (what I was quoted with a local Merc mechanic).
I would do it myself but I don't know enough to do so with confidence...thanks for any and all input...
