My 93 Bayliner 2459 seems to turn over a bit slow. However, since I did not have it until recently, I don't know what to compare it with. It starts fine, but, seems to turn over a bit tough on the first turn of the key or so. I am wondering if:
1. The starter is getting a bit tired, and should I proactively replace it, or is that a normal response,,,compression good etc? I've got tow batteries of good condition driving it BTW....
2. If I replace it....anyone knows this model boat knows I'd probably need an extortionist to get at it...pathetic set up for working on it down there..no room.
3. Would I be better off having a marine mechanic do it?
4. Are the after market starters ok and reliable if I need replace...about 50 bucks vs...OEM?
Thanks for all input

Ayuh,... The motor should spin right over quickly,....

I'd start by Cleanin' All the electrical connections, from the battery, to the starter, 'n the ground at the block 1st,....

If ya end up replacin' the starter, go with the newer lighter more powerful permanent magnet starter,.... Marine rated of course,....

1 - test the starter, however 95% of the time its a bad connection
2 - the starter in all boats is a PITA to get to
3 - that is between you and your pocket book.
4 - OEM is a GM delco starter. after market such as DB electrical come from an off-shore source.

If it was me, I would be cleaning the battery cable connections as step one. make sure the connection is shiny clean, then when tight, seal with marine varnish.

Most but not all have better access with the exaust manifold removed, and some you actually have to remove the motor

I may be wrong, but think if the timing is off it will affect the motor starting easily.

I guess I'm a lucky one... I can get my starter out in less than 10 minutes... that's probably why my has never gone out... if it was a pain I'm sure it would go out every year!!... now that being said when I did replace mine I went with sierra... no problems at all in 3 years and 800+ hours... I have heard some people have had issues with them but I never have... and there on 4 other boats of my friends and no problems with those either... you can take this info for what it cost ya
