Hi, New boat(to me), new to this forum. it's a 1993 seaswirl with 4.3 omc cobra. On shifting into gear, it clunks as normal and then 2 to 5 seconds later clunks again as though it's going into gear again. After the second clunk, it performs fine. no clunks at high rpm. I've read the posts on the omc shift problems as well as stuarts page and am concerned about losing my gears. I wonder if either of the following 2 conditions could have contributed: 1)battery was dying, barely would start- could this affect the ESA? 2) The poles from the sunshade that stores in the transom had caught the shift cable from the engine to the remote and changed its path somewhat. Trying to get it repaired this week b4 leaving for a 1 week lake vacation, but all shops seem to be a month out. thanks for your help.

#2 could do it. Cables do strange things when they're moved around sometimes. I put an ATV back together and couldn't get it to idle down. Then I noticed whenever I turned the handlebars the idle would drop. The cable was just barely out of place, but it was enough to change the adjustment on it. Same thing likely happened to your shift cable.

Thanks, steve. I hope that's it. One marine shop I talked to says that this is a symptom of a worn clutch dog and that it is only a matter of time before it slips out of gear at high rpm and eats the gears. Others have told me that shifting into gear too slowly might cause this. I definitely was trying to ease it into gear. I doubt I'll have a chance to drop it in the water before my vacation to test it out without the sunshade in the way. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is one of these easy fixes and not time for a new gearset in week 2 of boat ownership

You'll be able to clunk it along a while, don't worry. But NEVER 'ease' it into gear. There's a forward shift detent on your remote control. Go that far in one motion. It might slip on you here and there even when you do everything right.
