'94 115 rebuild - is it worth doing?

I picked up a '94 115 from a buddy for $100 this morning. It has low compression on one cylinder and no lower unit but I wanted it for the midsection/power tilt and trim to put on the '73 115 runner that I bought on Saturday. From what I read on here it looked like the easiest/cheapest way to get power trim on the '73 would be to swap the whole mid section or at least the pivot bracket and trim unit from the '94 onto the '73.

My bud says the low compression on the '94 is due to a hole in the piston caused a fouled carb leaning out the mix. I finally had an attack of common sense this morning and think I might sell the '73 to finance a rebuild of the '94. I need to verify the compression on the other cylinders and pull the heads to see how bad the problem cylinder is but after rebuilding my 75 a couple of years ago I think rebuilding a V4 would be a fun project.

What do you guys think - if it is only the one piston/cylinder and the rest of the rotating assembly and mains are good am I better off putting a couple hundred bucks worth of parts and machine work in the '94 or keeping the '73 runner? I'm in no hurry since I just wanted a horsepower bump, I don't need to replace my motor or anything like that

I've only got $450 in the '73 and should be able to at least get my money back out of it. If I can get more that'll just go towards a new lower for the '94 :D

The 94 is worth rebuilding if you can find a cheap lower unit to fit it. The tilt and trim will not fit your 73 as the upper and lower mounts are in different places and powerhead mounting pattern is different so you cant swap the adapter plates to use the midsection.

Dang, bad news about the tilt and trim. Running the Missouri River SUCKS with no power tilt and trim when it's trashy so I think I'll rebuild the '94. I don't feel like hunting down the right TnT for the '73 since it sounds like they're a rare animal and a $600 CMC PT 135 on a $450 motor seems kind of silly.

I do have a lower for the '94 but it's in rough shape. I haven't tore it down yet but it has a hole knocked in it and was run awhile with just river water for lube. I don't have real high hopes for much inside of it to be salvageable.

Do you know off the top of your head what year lowers will work on that '94?

A 79-98 will work(crossflow) just watch driveshaft lenghts and use your shift rod.
