I went to tune up my engine, changed out the dist., rotor, and plugs. Put a timing light on the engine and it read 16 deg. BTDC the manual said it should be set to 8 deg BTDC. So I adjusted it to 8 deg. There wasn't any noticeable differance except it seemed to idle faster at 16 deg. (original setting) maybe a little smoother. Anyway I've taken her out a couple of times and can't really find any difference. I stopped by a boat shop and inquired and they said that you have to set base timing first before timing this engine. It has the thunderbolt V ignition. He said I would need a special tool to do this? Anyway Is this right? do I have to set the base timing and is the current set up wrong? Thanks,

you must find the purple/white wire and ground it to put into base timming mke sure engine is warm first. it usualy is around the dist in the big harness. this must be done when adj the carb idle mixture screws also.
