My 1995 50hp Force overheated. It probably ran for 1-2 minutes with the alarm going before I figured out what it meant. It had been running great and had a steady stream coming out the telltale. I'm assuming it is the impeller but am wondering what/how I should check if the overheating damaged the motor. What's the first thing to check? Compression? What should the compression be?
Thanks.

If you shut her down before it seized, you should be ok.

Compression should be in the 120 to 140 range

If compression is low, pull the head and examine, then replace head gasket.

Re: 94 50hp Force overheated

Thanks roscoe. I removed the lower unit to access impeller but the is a brass bushing near the top of the shaft that appears to be pressed on. How do I remove? The impeller looks ok but will replace anyway
Also will be doing a compression check. Is there a step by step procedure I should follow? I understand the engine must be warmed up for an accurate test so assume I need to replace impeller prior to testing compression which hopefully takes care of the overheating issue. Do I need to ground the plug wires? How?
I did install a telltale as per the thread posted here using 1/4" barbed fitting and 3/16" hose. Could that be the cause of the overheating?

Thanks for the advise.

I changed impeller and checked compression. One cyl was 130# and the other 140#. Sound good?
