94' Evinrude 30hp is leaking oil/grease?

Ok heres the deal, I just got this boat with the 30hp Evinrude. The guy that I got it from was running a 16:1 fuel mixture. I know this is wrong! Last night I changed it to 50:1, and now there is a greyish oil/grease textured slime coming from a small hole just below where the lower unit is bolted on. Any ideas?

Most likely its the Drain and what your seeing is unburned oil coming from it from the rich mix that was used..

If I was you I would do a de carb and clean it out....dont get alarmed at the stuff coming out after....it may ooze for a day.....

Follow Tashsdaddy's instructions

Wonder why the guy ran such a rich oil mix.....

also change the lower end lube to see if any water is in it....just to make sure....

Yeah I thought that it was some type of drain hole too. But there is A LOT oozing out. I have no idea why there was such a rich mixture to begin with. After the fuel mixture was adjusted to 50:1, I had to readjust idle and throtle linkage to get it to run properly. It's running great now though. Just the leak...

BP has capped the well but the remnants will be around for a long time to come. As it will be for your leg now that your using the right mix. I get that leakage with all my smaller HP motors and sometimes it surprises me how long they drip for. I have a 40 HP and I've never seen a drip at the drain hole or the prop. The only difference is the 40 has VRO pump. Best of luck. Rick.

Is there a certain type of gear lube that I should use for the lower unit? Also, is there any specialty tools that I'll need to change it out?

How hard is it to replace seals on top of the lower unit? I can see a small crack in the seal in a couple places.

80-90W outboard gear oil. Also, you should replace the plug washers (#1, 2).

edit:
You can buy outboard gear oil in tubes, but for extra convenience you can buy a pump adapter for the larger quart bottles of gear oil and save a little money.

Thanks Jasper...

Can anyone tell me about this gasket between the lower unit and the midsection? If there is a leak at this gasket, what is it that is leaking out?

There is no gasket there.

Ok, it finally stopped leaking oil. It slowly leaked for about 2-3 days once I changed the fuel mixture. The mystery ooze smelled like gas. Any reason to worry?

Sidenote: Now with the new mixture, it seems like I'm not coming up to top RPM at WOT??? Carb??
