i have a 94 force 50 that i just bought recently. i took it out several times and it went well. today while going back to the dock, if I try to throttle up high it just revs up real high and and stops moving in the water. I took apart the lower end and it doesnt seem like any gears are stripped. I can chug along at a low speed but thats it. Please Help with any suggestions!!!

Prop slipping on splines? Sounds like the steel spline insert in the prop is just spinning in the center of the prop.

Re: '94 force 50 BIG PROBLEM

thanks for the reply nate, i checked the prop and the spline and they dont seem to be stripped or damaged. I havent taken apart the long shaft that goes into the box and then on the the bottom of the lower unit. should I do that and check those gears or is it a straight shaft? any other suggestions? Thanks Again.

Re: '94 force 50 BIG PROBLEM

The splines on the prop insert may not be stripped, but the splines are more or less a pressed insert into the center of the prop and it could be possible for the insert to actually lose it's "grip" in the center of the prop and just spin in the center. It may not be noticeable just by doing a visual inspection of it. Maybe try putting the engine in gear and grab the prop and try rotating it by hand. It's the only suggestion I have at this point and maybe you will be able to tell for sure. I would think that if something is not engaging all the way within the gear box itself it would be making some kind of grinding or clunking noise much like grinding gears on a car.

Re: '94 force 50 BIG PROBLEM

A word of advice: Don't be taking stuff apart unless you have a manual to get it back together correctly. Adjustments, shimming, alignment, ect, are all very important.

Your symptoms are classic for a spun prop hub.
It is a pressed in rubber piece, between the metal hub and the outer housing.

The rubber wears and eventually will slip.

Very common problem.

Try a different prop.
Replace the prop.

Accelerating smoothly, instead of going full throttle from a stop, will help prolong the hub life.

thanks guys, it is an old prop and i ordered a new oneearlier this week b/c it was bent at the edges, hopefully thats it. i do have a manual so I can get it back together and i guess I'll use some type of marine silicone to seal it back up.
