Hey guys,
My 94 fling will not run for more than 10 minutes before it stops and will not start again for awhile. I tested the alarms for the overheat to make sure they go off, they do, and checked the timing ect. All of that is fine. Compression is like new. I am unsure what could cause this? Could the CDI be the problem? I have had a similar issue in cars when the ignition control module goes bad. The CDI appears to be pretty new, but the plugs on the coils show it is a little dry, with slight cracks appearing. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry, alot of people are familiar with these boats, sometimes I forget to post specifics. Its a Jet drive boat with an outboard motor mounted in board. Basically it is a johnson crossflow 115. JEER115 maybe. Hopefully that helps =D

Follow the CDI troubleshooting guide for a 1995 V4 Johnny/Rude. Chances are something is getting hot and then failing. Go just go through the steps.

Thanks. You think that the CDI is a good idea to start? I do not know what else could be warming up to shut it off?

Once it shutsdown you need to determine if your problem is fuel or spark...then you can start troubleshooting.

I would get the service manual before going any further. It helps you troubleshoot everything.
www.outboardbooks.com If you go to the web site, click on "SEARCH" and on the resulting screen, go to the space where it says

"Search by Bombardier part Number" and enter 503141.

You can test your temperature switches to see if they are OK or not. If it is overheating it should sound a constant alarm at 200 deg F +/- 6 degrees and open back up at 170 deg F +/- 6 degrees.

When mine died, after fixing everything with the coolant system, I pulled a plug out and put it on the block, turned the key to see if I was getting good spark. Found I had good spark on all 4 plugs so I started troubleshooting the fuel issue and found a bad fuel pump.

You can also review my thread that might help here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=489522&highlight=fling

I can try and help as much as possible. I am no expert but I have learned a lot about this engine while working on it for the past few months.

I hope this helps

So I changed out the CDI box, swapped to my spare carbs and it still does not like to idle at all. Also it will cut out sometimes after about 10 minutes of running. Does anyone have a fuel flow spec on this that I can get? I am not sure at this point why it will not Idle, actually even at a low rpm it sometimes backfires? Ideas?

I would really suggest getting the manual before you go any further, well worth the investment! Back firing many times points to a timing issue. A quick and easy check could be taking the flywheel off and checking the flywheel key.
