Yup. 48:1; 1 pint TC-W3 oil to 6 gallons 87 octane gas.

Thanks JB ! I've been using 50:1 without any problems, but another fisher who didn't know the ratio thought it was probably wrong and could damage the motor in the long run.

Of course you know that the 48:1 ratio that JB mentioned is the actual, accurate mixture, but is normally called "50:1".

I believe our metric friends actually mix at exactly 50:1. Or at least I'd assume so since they aren't bound by pints and gallons. I also have no idea what the "normal" size portable tank is in the rest of the world, maybe 25 L?

Of course, the US system was based on a 6 gallon tank and a pint of oil (or before that a quart, when they actually called it 24:1 instead of fudging and calling it 25:1; why "they" don't do that now and just call it "48:1", I have NO idea).

I remember in the early-ish 60s when our "big" (65 hp) 650 Merc had a 5 gallon tank and our (9.8) 110 Merc had a 2.5 gallon can and the Merc oil came in odd sized cans, not full pints, IIRC. Everyone else used 6 gallon cans, even for the small motors, and called for a pint of oil (or before that, a quart).

I even remember my buddy who had an late 50s/early 60s 5 hp Gale (OMC product, I believe... he used a Johnnyrude can/fittings) mixed up his gas 24:1 with a quart of SAE30 in the can!

They had a big fat Evinrude 75 or 100 of similar vintage (early, but not mid-60s) but I don't know if they were mixing 24 or 50:1.

I don't have memory of any Mercs at the old 24:1 ratio, but I don't go back to the white ones. Just the black ones, and I think it was in '63 or so we got the 650, and then in '66 or '67 we got the 110.. Our 65hp was silver/gold band IIRC, the 110 was definitely red band.

I digress. Slow day.

Tell your friend that all 2 stroke outboards have been 50:1 since - at least - the late 60s, some earlier than that.

Oh great! now I have a starter swirch problem!

Oh great! now I have a starter swirch problem!

Thanks for all the help on the fuel ratio guys. I wanted to go fishing today and my motor wouldn't turn over. I know it's not the battery cause I just got it back from autozone's free charge service. It could be the starter switch cause I noticed some corrosion on the connectors in the back. when using a pair of pliers I briefly jump started off the starter to see if I was getting power to the motor. I was. I then went back to autozone and purchased a starter switch....now the problem. The new starter switch has a diagram and markings on the back telling how to connect the wires such as battery connect here, starter here, acccessories here, etc. My existing switch does not. I have a black wire, black and yellow striped wire, purple wire, and a purple and red striped wire. WTF! Does anyone have a clue on what I should do? Do I have the right switch or do I need to go to a marine store for a starter switch?

carb problems! Help!

carb problems! Help!

My johnson 40 hp 2 stroke outboard has new fuel, proper ratio but when starting seems like it's not getting fuel. A buddy suggested carb problems. I am a little mechanically inclined. Is this a solution that I can repair myself or do I need to seek out a mechanic? Possibly someone out there near by could help me in exchange for? If you would just show me how, I would do the work. I am a concierge at a hotel in new orleans which grants me certain privileges throughout the city as well as here. I want to go fishing!! Lets work something out Please!!

I REALLY recommend you start a new thread with a title which describes your new issue. YOu are now not on the subject of fuel ratio, but starting problems.
