I have a 94 fourwinns horizon 210 with a 5.8L EFI
omc cobra stern drive. While running at full
throttle the engine powered down as if something
was binding up. The engine reved up for a second as if it came out of gear right before the engine shut completely off. Now it will not turn over. I'm pretty sure the engine is OK any ideas on what
could of caused this to happen. I talked with a repair man at a local repair shop and he said it sounded like the power coupling let go. Not sure
what this. Any help would be appreciated.

If you had said your Cobra was 1992,I would say the outdrive was improperly refilled.I suppose it could happen on a 1994 also.

A coupler failure shouldn't shut down an engine.

Maybe pull the drive and see if the motor will turn over.

DHP

Instead of worrying about how you may have filled it wrong, time to worry about what the problem is, then what may have happened.
First pull the drive off the boat and see if the engine will crank over. If it does, you have a drive problem. If it doesn't, you have an engine problem.
Once we know which is the problem area, then we can help you with the details.

HI! I agree with the prev posts. the drive is the easiest to pull off and I would start there. It dose sound like something came lose inside the drive thow , if it boged then reved dose not sound like a eng sez, But with boats any thing is posable!!! also is it stuck in gear, dose the prop turn by hand. because mine is a 1992 cobra and it has a switch that if its in gear it will not do anything (turn over) i hope i helped you have a big road ahead. GOOD DAY AND GOD BLESS!! GP

dodge1971340
thanks for the info. I know the engine is in great shape. Engines are the one thing I do know
about its the drive parts I don't have much knowledge about. The prop will turn by hand in neutral. I'm planning to remove the drive sometime today and see what I can find wrong.

The lower MUST be disassembled and checked. The oil passes between the two sections, so does pieces of metal. The bearings and gears may still be damaged. Time for a complete tear down and inspection.

How much and what kind of oil did you "fill" the drive with?

Yes, it takes special tools.
You start with a service manual or don't even attempt to take it apart, let alone putting it back together. The Volvo part number for the manual is 7796484.
And like I mentioned earlier, you MUST check the lower. If you don't, you will transfer all those minute shavings and metal chips into a new upper and destroy it again.
There are some things that should be left to the pros, and rebuilding the SX drive is one of them.

Re: 94 omc cobra stern drive trouble

I have a 93 OMC Cobra Drive that just went out over the weekend.
-- Sounded very similar, the engine locked up going 20mph and I took off the sterndrive and the Engine was fine, but an roller bearing in the Upper Gearcase locked up tight. I took the vertical gear out of the Upper Grearcase and I'm waiting for the new bearing.

Question:
There is no oil passage between the Upper Gearcase and Lower Gearcase. There is just a drive shaft sticking a foot out of the Lower Gearcase. So there shouldn't have been any damage or metal in get into the Lower Gearcase, correct?
