94 Yamaha 250 carb is LOUD!

I just got this motor and have been rounding up all the parts. FInally got it running on the hose today. With the cowl off, the engine is louder than the exhaust! Is this normal for this engine? This is my 1st yamaha and 1st 250. I am used to the sound of early 90s OMC 150s whos exhaust sound drowns out most all other noises. I would like to know if it is normal for this yamaha 250 engine to be louder than the exhaust.

havent gotten that far yet. Still working on controls and rigging. If you rev the motor up while standing next to it via the carb linkage, the sound actually hurts my ears...which is no easy task. It is hard to describe the sound, sounds like a huge unlubricated gear..... Seems to run ok. Idles and all....

my merc is load as $%#@ cant even here urself think with the top off in the yard but ull be surprise how much quieter itll be in the water

Instead of muffs, try running it using a large bucket/tote/barrel. Find something that is tall enough to cover the vents and run the hose to keep the water level high.

There is no back pressure when running on the muffs so the engine is much louder on the muffs.
