Tach is acting up and the regulator is smoked, can a smoked regulator take out other components if I continue to run? Also the only regulator listed that is close is this one---90-115 60 Degree-V4 1996-Up 18-5830 . It looks the same but it specifies '96 and up?

BRP makes it different also, not certain why.

For the '95 they call for part # 584847
For '96 up they call out the # 586075

Make sure yours is a 95

Those 60 degree regulators are pretty much bullet proof, unless you use wing nuts on the battery, install a battery with reverse polarity, or turn off a battery switch while the motor is running.

Operating the engine with a bad regulator will disable the VRO oil warning alarm system, and most likely melt the insulation on the stator, under the flywheel plus could cause damage to the gauges and electrical parts.

If the reg/rec is shorted internally it could possibly catch the wires on fire.

Also be aware -- and you may be -- that any "18-" part number is a Sierra part, not a E/J manufactured part.

Also will it be safe to use if I just unplug the regulator from the stator? I suppose I should let you know what happened to the reg- I was trying to troubleshoot why my tach wasn't working and had the grey and purple switched by accident, I was messing around looking under the console and heard a hissing at the motor, looked up and saw a volcano spewing out of the top at the regulator, I quickly shut of the battery and checked out the situation, thats when I noticed I had the wires backward. I swaped them back turned on the battery and test ran it just for kicks. Amazingly the tach now worked properly, however two days later the tach was acting up so I figured I would post to get some advice on what steps to take next? Thanks for the help guys

I would stick with the OEM parts for this one.
I like Sierra parts for some things, but not this particular one.
