Ran fine at 3800rpm for 15 min and then started surging. Thought it was weed, cleared lower end, and motor stalled when restarted. Started again, put in gear and stalled again. Shutdown and removed cover. All plugs looked fine (wet), heads were warm but not hot, but had a "hot smell". The timing cover was much hotter than the heads. After cooling down (1 hour) tried to start but turned over real slow. Towed back and trying to narrow down the cause. Best guess is upper main bearing. Does anyone have other suggestions or maybe any advise on how to proceed? OMC manual is very lacking in explicit bearing removal. Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you're sure the starter is ok,remove the plugs and see if it turns. If it still won't turn or turns hard, pull the heads and examine the pistons and cylinder walls.

c/6

Hooty

Starter is fine. Turns over fine with plugs in after 4 hr cool down. Since timer plate cover was much hotter than heads, I think the bearing is the culprit. Read thru OMC manual and only instuctions are "remove bearing". Anyone have experience or pointers (do's and don'ts) for getting down to the bearing housing and pulling the bearing?
