Upper main bearing wiped out and spun. Is it true that the magnets in the flywheel cannot be replaced after they were damaged this model? Can anyone point me in the direction to find quality used parts (flywheel,crank,stator..)because new prices brought up my lunch??? Mechanic says $3000 for complete rebuild if he gets parts or $1000 labor if I get parts. Any websites with the components I need?

If the bearing locked up on crankshaft, the crankcase is a big paper weight. I would look for a rebuilt powerhead. You've got a lot of potential problems in the motor you have. A rebuilt powerhead is available for ~$3300 to $3500 here.

After complete teardown, block is toasted. Looks like I'm gonna sell the youngest child and get a new powerhead.

ANGUS,

what kind of problems were you experiencing with this motor before the upper bearing failure? if any?

I have a 1996 Evinrude 225hp v6 Ocean Pro that did the same thing about two months ago. I had to replace the whole powerhead. Total bill was $4400.00

The motor was experiencing some problems before the failure though.

Just be aware that when comparing notes that those are two completely different designed engines.

Just something to keep in mind!

Will
you have big block and mine was small block (past tense). Mine surged at 3800 rpm and sounded funny when I restarted. Those were the only symptoms. Looks like the supply passages to the bearings have little check valves to prevent back flow and these upper two got clogged and the bearings dried up and burned up. Word has it that this is the first motor of this type he has ever seen this happen (services 100's a season). Time to play the lottery. By the way, 3500 bucks is the number in my case given everything else on the old motor is good.
Good luck with the new power!

Were there any water marks on the upper and lower main bearings? If a bottom crankshaft seal starts to leak, water gets ingested and travels from the lower to the upper bearing thru a recirculation hose. The top bearing is under a greater load, so it will go first.

No water marks. Just dry, blued journals and melted upper seals.
