Had some lube come out of the water intakes when i went to fire up for the season. Have unit removed and separated, plan on inspection, cleaning, replacing all seals, gaskets and impeller w/ OEM kits, pressure checking. I have Clymer manual and link to Boatfix Merc manual. Top is in good shape and ready to be put back together. I understand setting the preload and have access to the correct tools. However, checking gear backlash/clearance requires a set of tools I do not have access to. if no brngs, gears, shafts were changed is it necessary to check backlash? When I complete the top I will reseal the bottom, again, same question. Thanks so much for your time. Matt

For just seals, no but you do the upper with the "rolling torque method". Unless you leaking from the prop seals ,leave them alone.
Be very careful doing the shift shaft seals too.
