My motor has a 20 inch shaft and is mounted on a Garelick bracket. Since new,I have had a problem with this motor pumping water. It may pump fine for 15 minutes or 2 hours, but it almost always just eventually quits pumping and overheats. I have installed several new pumps and thermostats over the years and always flush with Salt Away. I am beginning to wonder if the motor is low enough in the water, with the bracket all the way down, the water level is right at the split in the gearcase where you would drop the lower unit. Could this be my problem all along?

yep
the pump needs to be fully submerged, especaily at low hull and engine speeds. try dropping it another 3 inches.

Thanks rodbolt, it sure makes sense now that I look at it. The strange thing is, I have asked 2 different Yamaha dealers in the area about this and they both said it it is fine right where it is. I will look into a different bracket so that I can lower the motor and keep the pump flooded. I sure wish there were people with your expertise and experience around here.
Randy
