I have a "95" Astro here is my problem,It started with after I turned it off and I tried to start it again it would be like it was not getting gas after talking to several people all thought it was a fuel pump but one guy said it could be a relay(after it sits a couple of hours it starts like nothing is wrong) so that was a 11.00 part easy fix guess again,so second guess was a fuel pump so my nephew in law (good parts re placer)changes out fuel pump calls Sunday night say "I cranked it 25 times works great" pick it up (well I thought) same problem.I did notice earlier in the week that the radio presets and clock changed themselves and know the headlights did not work on Sunday but the blinkers did so NIL tries to start it Monday and now the blinkers don't work so does anyone have a clue which little computer part is crashing on me :eek:Thanks in advance Jim

Re: "95" Astro question

It's probably not as simple as changing out parts.
I had a similar problem with a '98 Blazer.
The wife would call me and say she couldn't go to work because it wouldn't start, but when I got home from work it would fire right up.
After about pulling out my hair trying to figure it out it ended being a loose connection at the fuse panel under the hood to the power wire leading back to the fuel pump.

Same issue with my Jimmy. Under the engine compartment fuse / relay box you will find some corroded wiring. Sort them out and re-make the connections and all should be well. Don't know where it is in an astro but they are pretty similar systems. Friend with a Blazer had the same thing.
Good Luck and I hope this is what it is.

Jim I will assume that is a 4.3 v6. But it sounds like you have 2 different problems going on. On the cranking part check ignition coil I believe that is the one that is mounted on a bracket on intake. Look for grayish color around the middle. Like it?s been hot at one time. That model is notorious for cranking fine until it heats up then it looses continuity in coil windings. Just another thought or my 2cents worth. You can also put an Ohm meter on it to check resistance if it discolored.

According to the NIL it looks like the rotor button and the cap could be part of the problem(any thoughts) remember the goal is to get running to take it to a auto mech, the NIL is a good guy but I think this is out of his league but with all of your help if we back into fixing it all is good

Only other thing I can think of is Ignition Module or crankshaft sensor. Just thinking out loud here now. Is it firing at the plugs. Does the oil smell like gas. I put a few CPI on thoes in the past, hard to get to though:confused:(

Check the wires at the starter solinoid....there are fuseable links there that may have corrison where they meet the harness....also make sure the main bolt in the solinoid is secure....they do loosen up......you have to remove the wires off it to make sure it is tight...if all is good check coil or crank sensor

The CFI units in those things are very touchy about fuel pressure. If they are off by just a few pounds from specs they won't start. Have your NIL double check the fuel pressure. I assume he replaced the fuel filter?

The first test I run on a no-start car that cranks over , to determine if it is a fuel problem , or a spark problem , is to shoot some starting fluid into the intake...if it fires off, its a fuel problem
if not , we move on to spark...
pull plugs and ground to block
basics...
start with the basics
work from simple to complicated
