I have a 95 Johnson 6hp 2stroke. ( not sure of the model number, doesn't have a tag like my older johnsons) that won't seem to idle low enough without dieing. I just pulled the carb off and found some small particles in the fuel bowl that I suspect made they're way into the idle circuit. And I noticed that the previous owner has the idle adjusment screw cranked down pretty far, which seems suspect to me.

. Now there as an idle mix valve on the top plate of the carb that is turned out roughly 4 turns.

does 4 turns sound right to you guys? I thought these where supposed to ne out more like 1 1/2 turns out? I just need to make sure before i pull it apart to clean.. Now when I was idling down to troll after the motor warmed up it would idle well for a minute or two then die. To get it started back up I would have to give it a little choke and open the throttle up all the way to get it going again. When it did start back up it would let out a bit of smoke which makes me think its loading up and that idle mix screw is letting too much fuel in.. The motor runs great at anything above idle. Sorry for the long winded/scattered brained post. Just trying to give all the info i have. Thanks, Jim p.s. it has good compression.

Basically, what I really need to know is how many turns out that idle adjustment screw in the second pic should be set at.
