95 Mercury 150 grinding when getting into gear

Hi everyone....

I have a 95 mercury 150 and when i go forward into gear its fine but from forward to reverse it makes an awful grinding noise then goes into gear... also happens from reverse to forward.

any help would be appreciated.

It's dog clutches. They'll clatter if you shift them slowly. If you shift it right, you'll get a little klunk. If your idle is too high, you'll get a resounding klunk, and maybe some clatter.

You have to shift fast, don't ease into the shift.

Works a lot better when I shift fast but i still get some clatter... I've heard thats normal on a merc.. thanks guys.
