I have a 95 evinrude oceanpro 60 V6 175 horse
The problem at hand is shifting. It seems just impossible to adjust my shift cable enough to get my motor smoothly into both for and rev. i can make it do one or the otherand have replaced the plastic shift arm after it broke but now it has the abvove stated problem.Thye shift cable itself seems to have a little more play thanit should could this be it.Ihave changed lower unit lube and saw very little metal shavings but there was a smell of a burnt kind?? Should a shift cable have any play at all?We are really close and cn actually shift into both gears with a little pressure with even my fingers!!!I hope this means there is too much play in my cable/shift rm and nothin more serious Please Help!!! Tarpon Season in st pete just isnt the same from a Pier

Re: 95 oceanpro

I have the same motor. I will look at my setup this weekend to see if I can offer any hints. Try securing the entire length of the shift cable. Sometimes a floppy cable causes too much back-lash.
Good Luck.

Re: 95 oceanpro

Thanks Angus, anything will help. Now by securing, do you mean complete removal?Because i will probably just replace it if i can figure out what size it is without removing it.(I have a tower in my boat and dont know exactly what size it is and it will be a pain to fish a new one up without the old one to help pull it through)If need bei will cut a few more access wholes in my deck to help. Any other suggestions are more than appreciated Thanks again ohhhh and by the way.... by play in the cable I mean when i removed it from the motor and shifted into for and rev the nuetral position was always about 4mm away from where it previously stopped for nuetral

Tie a good strong cord to the old cable before pulling it out. Use the cord to pull the new cable thru.

Re: 95 oceanpro

By securing I mean lashing with cable ties and clamps to the bulkheads so the entire cable doesn't flex while shifting which adds to backlash. The 3/16" hysterisis in the cable neutral position is a common malady as controls age and stretch and wear. Check the clevis points at either end of the cable for slop. Worn and rounded clevis pins can be replaced easily to lessen this condition. Again, I will inspect my controls this weekend (tomorrow morning) and add any other hints I may discover.
Another thought... If your shift pivot arm on the motor is slotted, you can slide the clevis away from the pivot point (lengthen the moment arm) so the backlash has less affect on the shift position. Only do this if you have enough "throw" to fully engage forward and reverse.
Good luck

Re: 95 oceanpro

I replaced the entire cable on the 30th and it still did not want to go.Now, the piece that actully shifts the gears felt real stiff so what i did was i removed the linkage and manually forced the tranny into reverse, then i put the shifter in reverse and reconnected the linkage. This worked in the front yard meaning i had both gears and i took it fishin the next day and it only worked in reverse about 3/4 of the time!?!?!?!?!?!? I think it may be some kind of dunk buildup in the reverse gear.(I only usd it once all winter.) i was wondering what you thought? thanks again

Replace the shift rod seal. Check gear oil for water.
