ok i tried putting water intake vents in a tub and couldnt get it to give a teltale. now ive tried the muffs and im getting a teltale with them but after about 2 mins the alarm starts sounding. and the arrow on the dash is blinking over the temp icon and the green circle icon on dash. not sure what the green one stands for. i pulled stats and boiled them and they opened, but it seemed dry in the stat housing.
could pump be weak, poppet valve not working, maybe clogged passages. where are the water passages that i would be able to clean without disassembling the motor? if any? any help or forum links to check.
thanks
andy

Re: 95 saltwater 130 overheating

You shoud replace a water pump every couple of years, more than that if you are in dirty or sandy conditions. you mentioned the thermostat housing was dry. You may want to try starting the engine brielfy with the t-stat covers off to see if water is making that high up into the power head. If it is not then it's likely the water pump service. Also there is likely a water pressure relief valve on your exhaust cover. It diverts water as the pressure / rpms increases. If it is dirty then it could stay open during low rpms, then the engine will overheat. You didn't post your model number so I couldn't check on the pressure relief location, but you can on yamaha-motors.com.
