First, you need to give more information, I am going to guess that you have a Mercury Outboard engine, you do not tell us which it is. You would probably be better off posting this question on the Mercury outboard forum, that is where the people that know the answer are at. My thoughts are to check the shift cable, there should be at least one cable from the throttle/shift lever to the engine, then from there you should have cables or linkage that works the carburetor /injectors and one for the shifter, you need to be sure they are working properly. Now as I said before go to the proper Mercury or Mercruiser forum and post your question.
