OK so what I know so far is when I got the boat the guy I got it from told me the swich was bad. Before I go throwing money in the hole I want to make sure that is the problem. I checked the wires coming out of the swich with a test light and the red wire lights up when touching the frame of the boat so I assume thats the positive. The other two wires are blue and blue with a stripe and neither lights up when touched to a ground. If I touch the light to the red wire and blue wire it lights up and the light goes off when I hit the swich up. The same happens when I use the blue wire with a stripe and push the swich to the down position leading me to beleive the swich is working fine. I went back to the motor and found two wires coming from the tilt motor and I assume power to either wire would make the motor run up or down. I used a peice of wire to connect these wires that go to the trim motor to power and I got nothing. I am guessing that the trim motor is bad but would like someone elses input before spending money on something that may or may not be broke. Thanks any advice is apreciated.

Re: 95 yamaha 40 trim/yilt wont work

When you pressed the switch while the test light was in place, the switch closed its contacts and bypassed the light; hence, the light no longer saw 12 volts across the contacts. That confirmed the contacts are working.

Check for relays in the trim/tilt circuit. Disconnect each one from its blue or blue w/stripe wire. Put your test light on the wire and to ground. Depress the switch up and down to see if it lights up, confirming you have 12 volts to that point. Do the same for the other blue wire. If so, then test the wire going out of the relay to the trim/tilt motor for 12 volts on each wire. If 12 volts present there, then suspect bad motor.

If you have a manual, it should help you identify relay wiring.

the 2 wire motor needs + on one wire and - on the other to run. Touch them both to a 12 v battery to see if motor will run, reverse the wires on the battery to go the other direction

anything for boats and motors are priced high, that is why they call them holes in the water that you throw money into.
Bite the bullet and fix it right , online parts are a little better
