Rebuilding '96 200hp. #6 piston (port-bottom)is scuffed in the area of the wrist pin ends. Can see very light marking(scuff) on cyl. wall - top & bottom - can polish out.. Area on piston about
1 1/2" wide where scuff (pin ends). Other cyls OK Pin OK. Retainers OK. Discovered no stats in motor.Corrosion - almost none.
OK to reuse piston? Ideas on cause - stats gone? Heads good color. Piston tops look good.Bearings look good. Pre-mixing fuel.
Any suggestions/ideas greatly appreciated.

Lean condition in a carb? Thermostat stuck? No matter how you slice it, heat usually causes scuffing, particularly since oil isn't an issue for you.

It's unwise to reuse a scuffed piston. If the scuffing is as light as you say, it may be OK, it's up to you to decide if you wanna go back in there if you're wrong. :)

-W

I have buffed them out before. After buffing, if you can feel(with your eyes closed) anything strange as you run your fingers over the area, it is probably best to replace. If you can't feel any abnormalities, then you will most likely be OK.......

If you have those marks on the side next to the wrist pins this is normaly caused by not allowing the motor to properly warm up before taking off at the ramp. Since the wrist pin area of the piston is the thickest it will heat up the fastest. This type of wear is called four corners. You see alot of this in jet skis and bass boats.
