My buddy has been tormenting me for years about replacing my impeller, which I haven't done in 10 years, is this something I need to do soon? How hard is it to replace the impeller?

Nothing like living with a time bomb. Especially when it breaks up and you end up pulling the power head to get the pieces out cause it still over heats after the impeller replacement. With a factory service manual it's easy to do.

Well I loosened the lower unit but it only dropped 1/2 inch.. I see it he other posts that there is a linkage bolt to the shifter that is probably holding the lower unit up.. Where's the bolt that I am missing?

You are verrrry lucky or not a lot of long WOT runs. The impeller needs to be changed every 2 years on the 93 and up closed deck blocks due to piston pin migration.

Well I am going to do a full replacement of the impeller and pump housing, does any know what the part number is for a 1996 Johnson Oceanrunner J225TXEDE??

That would give me a good start... Again, thank you guys!!

The reason for dropping the lower and replacing the pump every couple of years is not only for the impeller, but also so the splines can be lubricated and other items can be checked out. While you're in doing some overdue maintenance, check the thermostats and poppet valves, it's likely they are going to need to be replaced too, and if it's 10 years since the engine was last touched, think seriously about cylinder head and power-head gaskets.... They don't last forever either (5 to 7 years is considered a good life)....

Re: 96 225 impeller, never been replaced.

Yeah the gaskets look rather worn but the compression was OK on all 6 last time I checked.. What would be the ideal range for compression in these cylinders (92-102 is what I got last time if I remember correctly)? I can check them this weekend.. I know it's a hideous thought, but my logic of "if it's not broke don't fix it" has kept me from touching the engine and it's run fairly well with that mindset. I have never had any serious issues but I am sure now that they are mounting a major revolt against me and will all pop up at the same time! Oh, and I didn't even know I had thermostats, I guess I assumed that it was free flowing all the time. Where are the thermostats located? Should I know what a "Poppet valve" is? I probably need to get me a repair manual, but in the meantime, can you give me a run down of what they are and where they are located?

I appreciate you guys so much, I do the same thing on aviation forums that you guys do here, but my responses wouldn't help yall at all.. Thanks for all the advice over the years!!

Re: 96 225 impeller, never been replaced.

As the gaskets go between full engine heat and full lake water cold they get brittle, and then start to leak... You might be showing nice clean spark plugs, but that is the first sign of water leaking into the cylinders.

May I suggest if you don't know where the thermostats are (or the fact that this engine actually has them), or what a poppet valve is, for this job, take it to someone who knows what they are doing....

Re: 96 225 impeller, never been replaced.

"Case in point" "if it's not broken, don't fix it" I know that sounds stupid but if I am getting good compression from all 6, why would I touch it? I know that their may be an imminent failure looming but it's working now. I snapped off a couple of bolts to the lower unit trying to free the foot for a impeller replacement. Corrosion is as expected and spreading like cancer in a southeastern coastal area.. Can someone give me a ballpark number on what I should expect on a compression test??

.... I snapped off a couple of bolts to the lower unit trying to free the foot for a impeller replacement.

That's because those bolts are normally removed, cleaned and refitted EVERY YEAR as part of the service schedule... They broken because of neglect...

Corrosion is as expected and spreading like cancer in a southeastern coastal area..

As it is on any coast of Australia... And so we do the maintenance to keep it at bay....

Can someone give me a ballpark number on what I should expect on a compression test??

Just because the compressions are good means nothing. Gaskets leaking small quantities of water into the chamber will not show up on a compression test... Those gaskets WILL fail, and if they haven't been replaced in over 10 years, sooner rather than later.... It's your choice... a few hundred now, or write the engine off when it throws a rod????
