Re: 96' 3.0L Merc. carb question
James:

Put your plugs back in, put water to the outdrive (lake or muffs, either way), and remove the flame arrestor from the carb. Start the motor, rev to 1500-2000 rpm, and slowly pour or use a syringe to squirt water down the carburetor throat, pausing whenever the rpm begin to drop. Pass about a quart of water through the carb in this fashion, at varying rpms if you like. Once you've finished, stop the motor, pull the plugs and check them; they should be much cleaner - the coffee brown we strive to maintain. Congratulations! - you've not only cleaned your plugs, you've also decarbonized your pistons and much of the combustion chamber and valve surfaces.

Make sure you take the time now to adjust your carburetor settings (lean it out, dude) in order to remedy the situation that caused the carbon build-up to begin with.

Happy boating!
