I have done a great deal of reading but it can only do so much for my limited knowledge. I have a 92 mercruiser 4.3 that has set for a while and I havent been able to get to turn over. I had planned on upgrading this motor before any of this happened.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 96+ 4.3 auto short block in pretty good shape rotating assembly and for pretty cheap. If i plan on putting rebuilt vortec heads, a 2114 intake, and edelbrock 1409 carb on this newer block, will i be able to use anything from 92 engine (alternator, starter etc...)

I obviously know Ill need a marine head gasket set, but just wondering if this would be a good or reasonable choice to replace my 92 motor by building a 96+ to replace it. Thanks for your patience with my ignorance!

All the externals should bolt up.
You need to put brass core plugs in the block.
Also if the newer motor has a truck cam it should be ok but if not the cam will need replaced or it will be a dog.

Truck cam as in just out of a normal 1/2 ton pickup?
