I have a 1996 Johnson Outboard, 50 h.p. triple, oil injection.

I have had intermittent problems with the motor stalling.

When I travel at speeds above 1/2 throttle, the motor will shut off, just like I turned off the key. This will happen after about 1/2 mile of travel. However, it fires right back up without any rough idle or hesitation, and without priming, choking, etc.

I have run the motor at closed to 1/4 throttle for extended periods since the problem originally occured, and it has not done it at those engine speeds.

If the power pack goes bad, does it usually give intermittent problems like this? I have had one go bad before, and it was dead. End of story.

Thanks for your help guys,

PCG

Pro Guide - 'tis the season (as I'm sure you're aware), we're all a little busier now, so a little patience if we don't get to you right away :D ...

Inspect the wiring on the starboard side where it runs from the power pack to under the flywheel to the stator and timer base. As you advance the throttle, there is normally some movement in this wiring, due to the mechanical advance of the timing lever. It's possible the wiring has worn thru and shorting out at that throttle setting. Also inspec the rest of the engine wiring harness, in particular any black with yellow stripes (stop circuit). If that wire is shorting to ground, it will stall out the motor. Don't neglect to check the boat wiring and key switch. Ideally, if you had a short remote test harness, you could eliminate the boat wiring and key switch. Keep us posted.

-John

Today it stalled out completly at 3/4 throttle, and upon restart the SLOW system was activated.

I have water flow.

What would cause it to stall and restart normally 3 times, but on this last time, for the SLOW system to be activated?

SLOW is designed to activate during an overheat. Did you get any alarm horn or lights and does your alarm system function? Several items can cause SLOW to falsly activate, such as the use of non-suppressor spark plugs (recommended plug is Champion QL78YC gapped to .030"), excessive spark plug gap (usually in excess of .045"), a pinched temp switch wire (tan base color, probably has blu stripe), mis-routing of that wire too close to the ignition coils, or possibly a bad power pack.

Water flow doesn't necessarily mean the engine isn't overheating. Water flow on 99.9% of all Evinrude & Johnson engines built in the last 30 years is: intake screen, water pump, water tube (thru mid-section), powerhead base adapter and exhaust housing/cover - this is where the tell-tale is plumbed in and why the water is ALWAYS cool. From there water circulates thru the block, into the t-stat and cylinder head and then is dumped thru the exhaust cavity and thru the hub of the prop. You can have a blockage anywhere down stream of the exhaust housing/cover, still have a strong tell-tale stream and have an overheated engine.

-John

I am using Champion Plugs, QL78YC.

I was guessing the power pack was bad, but I will also look into the cooling system.

Thanks for your input guys.

PCG
