Hi all,
Had an ignition problem a month of so ago and had to replace the Iginition ECM (old one died). Engine now starts and all is good except the stereo and fish finder are dead.
Stereo has been in the boat since new, I installed the fish finder about 2 years ago, and its wired off the the accessory outlet.

I have checked the fuse block underneath the dash and all are ok. Anyone got any other ideas? Im a little stumped!

I should point out that the new EMC was a newer model (old one was no longer available) that need splicing into the existing wiring loom (behind the distributor) perhaps thats has something to do with it? although i doubt it somehow?

I have a '97 Capri that I did the ICM upgrade (wire splice) to. The radio and transducer power should not be any where near the ICM harness. I suspect you have an issue not related to the ICM change.

If you have power at the fuse block, keep tracing back to the finder and radio. Then trace the ground from them back.

Do you have or know how to use a volt/ohm meter? Just because the fuses are good doesn't mean they have voltage to them so using a meter will answer the question, problem is I don't know what you know! Plenty of us can help you learn though so if you don't have one go down to Radio shack and get a cheap one and then come back. Ok?

A Volt/Ohm meter not just a voltage checker or a test light

Hi there, yes I can drive a test meter no problems, didnt have one handly when i was on the boat. Its the next check.

Ok so first thing to check is power and ground, I check ground first, put your meter on Ohms on 100 ohms scale or less, test from the radio black or negative lead AT THE RADIO, and the other lead to the battery negative post your reading should be 0 or not more then 1 Ohm if its more then trace the wire from the radio back to the next connection and test until you find where the resistance disappears now you know where the issue is for the ground, and fix it probably a bad connection but if it tests good then move on. Now test your voltages from the fuse block to the radio if you have good power and ground (Don't forget the ignition sense lead for the stereo) then your radio should work if not then you have an issue with your radio. repeat these steps on the fish finder and let us know!

Great thanks, I'll give that a shot next time I get over to my boat. Sounds easy enough although getting into some of those tight spots is the hard part.
Cheers!

Oh trust me I have been doing vehicle electrical for nearly 30 years....and my chiropractor has made alot of money off my spine!LOL

Something to remember, I always check the voltage of my battery first, If I find a power reading (further down the line) that isn't the same then I know I have a problem. Also make sure you test battery voltages at the post not the clamps on the post you want the cleanest reading you can get, even the smallest resistance can add up over several poor connections.
