Wow, Grinding sucks. But i think its over.:D bow sanded.jpg hull sanded.jpgtransom sanded.jpgThese are after a good washing out with some Heavy duty degreaser from Sams Club.

Now comes the fun part...1st up is the transom. OOPS if your out there i have some pressure treated wood i am going to use. I have had it for about a year now so its pretty dry. The main reason is because i need to save money and i already have it.

I was planning to get 5 gal of Poly resin some 1708 and some csm (how much do i need?)so i can start laminating the transom wood together and glue it to the skin.
Can i glue the transom to the skin and then cut the hole out? Ill use the transom bolt holes and the transom eyelet hooks along with a couple pieces of 1/4" angle to help squish it together.

Now as far as the stringers go...would pressure treated be ok there as well. I was thinking of laminating 2 pieces of 3/4" together ... to span longer than 8' and to be a little stronger. Suggestions?

Ill also need to make some Super Dooper Cheaper Peanut Butter. How much of what shall i need for that.

try to keep all your questions about the build on one thread bud.....

if you need me.....i am here for you.....

as a mod.....i dont get to spend halt the time i used to in this section.....so pm me if you have a question....ill answer as soon as i log on,,,,and thats lots !....lol

ok....5 gals wont do,,,,you need minimum 10 for this section.

click the link in my sig for transom building....plus...the recipes for oops sooper dooper structural peanut butter.

get a gallon container of each.

I LOVE USING PT PLY FOR WHAT YOU ARE USING IT FOR.....but it need to dry for too long for me.....but you have it and its dry ! wahoo !

to calculate how much glass to buy....

you will use 2 layers between the skin and the transom....one layer for the transom laminating...and one layer for the exterior....
so take the width of the boat.....and x that by 4....you will also need one layer of 1708....but add 2 feet for tabbing.

this is the transom alone......get the widest roll you can. the cut offs can allways be used.

(you arent going to use that much poly resin in this part....only a gallon or two....the rest comes in with the stringers).

as for the stringers......the calculations are based on the same principal.....6 ins away from the stringer....up the stringer....down the stringer and another 6 inches on the hull....x the legnth of the boat, and how many stringers.

btw.....i would only use one 3.4 inch stringer.....i would not laminate two......you dont need it and it just adds weight.

read thru my thread.......forget about the extension.....just look at the transom and stringer portion...there are some fantastic posts in there by pros about how to glass....and (ondarvr, and a few other guys....keeep in mind....i was just learning at that time...so they really helped me) that thread contains the most detailed instructions on how to build a boat on this site......i built it before you tube really caught on......so it is all pics. but the comments from the guys are the best any where.

if i miss a question.....and the other guys dont jump in .....pm me.....or ill give you my phone number if you get stuck....
but you will walk away with the best built boat any where !

cheers

Looks good . . .

FWIW -

I have an "Angle Grinder" with a wire wheel brush attachment, which works great on roughing up the slightly unevenness of the hull surfaces. So, if you have one or are in the mood to buy more tools, just a suggestion

Aw shucks...:redface:lol...cool man
as far as the resin goes 5 gal was just a start. Im figuring on 15-20 gal when all said and done. Ive been calling everywhere trying to get prices on mat and such and when they ask me what i need...I was like a deer staring in the headlights. Even after readings hundreds of posts here i was just unsure of what i needed...Thankyou.

I did find a place local that i can get 5 gal of resin for $100. and thats a marine /hardware store.

Ill go out here in a few and calculate how much matt and 1708 i need. Then ill get sucked into the "The Hull extension in progress" for another few hours...again.

Re: 96 Bayliner Crappy...Transom Strings & Deck gonna need help

i went out and made some supports for the boat ON the trailerstarboard support.jpgport bow support.jpg

those bunks were really pushing the hull inwards. once i put the supports under the rear chines and the keel... the bulges seemed to go away. I just need to walk carefully around on the hull now...At least i only weigh about 155lbs:rolleyes:
i may add more suports toward the center before i start with the stringers .

I used blue foam to make a template to cut my transom. Thats a lot easier than scribing and cutting 1 1/2" wood many times.blue foam for template.jpg

For the transom I just rotated the grains opposite each other then screwed it together temporarly so i could cut it to shape.

next i set it in the hull against the transom where i wanted it to go and using the transom bolt holes from the outside i screwed it tight to the boat. transom cut to size 2.jpg

That made it easy to trace out the hole in the transom, drill my stud holes, drill my transom tie down holes, drill the drain plug hole, and check this out...hole saw angle.jpgI was able to use an 1 3/4" hole saw at an angle to match the same spot and angle of the skin on the transom for the steering lever.

tomorrow ill stop buy the hardware store and get my first 5 gal bucket and some matt and 1708 and peanut butter ingrediants so i can get that thing glued blued and tatood in place.

Re: 96 Bayliner Crappy...Transom Strings & Deck gonna need help

ok here is where im at now...transom filleted.jpg

got the transom laminated together, sealed with resin, p/b'd the transom to the skin using 4 pieces of 1/4" angle, and today i fillet'd the edges of the transom.

do i tab before i put any material on the face of transom? or do i just put a full piece over the transom and extend over the sides about 6" or so..i am really confused right now.

i dont have any csm or 1708 on the face of the transom right now its just sealed glued and fillet'd..what do i do next?

Re: 96 Bayliner Crappy...Transom Strings & Deck gonna need help

you fill the gap around the edges with thickened resin (peanut butter) then you tab.....then you cover.

the idea is that the next layer of glass goes over every thing.

so start with the smallest surface area....(the pb) then cover that with the tab .....then wrap the whole shabang. first with csm....then with the 1708.

is the resin you are using waxed or unwaxed?...it makes a big difference......and 5 gals for 100 bux is good !

It is unwaxed

i already have the edges around the transom filleted.
tonight ill work on tabbing in with the 1708

then a full wrap of csm then 1708

oops... you have talked about filling your strakes with gype...what is that?...Peanut butter?...i have removed the rotton wood from my strakes and need to fill them back in before i can cut my stringers. should i refill them with wood like was there before? or gype? I was planning on doing as Woodonglass suggested...setting the wood strips in a bed of p/b, filling gaps with pb and then finishing the top off with a layer of csm. would that work? which would be cheaper? i already have enough southern pine 2x4's(he said to use that because its very resinous and water resistant). it just sounds like an awful lot of pb but if it needs to be done then it needs to be done

yep.....gype is thickened resin filler AKA peanut butter.

you dont have to fill them....but it will add rigidity to the hull.

wood will be fine as a space taker upper....just male sure no water can get in there

Re: 96 Bayliner Crappy...Transom Strings & Deck gonna need help

So today I cut my filler pieces for the strakes sealed them with resin and the did as woodonglass suggested. I mixed up some peanut butter and filled a ziplock bag and used it like a pastry bag to lay a bead in the strakes. Then I bedded the pieces of wood them

I still have to go back and fill the gaps and place some csm over them. But I may go with some combo mat over them instead for more strength. Thoughts people.

I also started stretching my plywood for the stringers. I have to make 8' stretch into about 13'. Glad I still have my board stretcher lol

Re: 96 Bayliner Crappy...Transom Strings & Deck gonna need help

whats the best way to make sure my hull isnt twisted before i start with my stringers? should i try to level the boat side to side? (where do i check level at?

or...since level is hard to find on a boat???

right now i basically have three points of contact supporting the boat. On the chines in the rear(one on each side), and one on the keel about two thirds the length of the boat. Do i need more?

Re: 96 Bayliner Crappy...transom,stringers help!

dimensional wood or laminated ply for front motor mount?

the old looks to be a 4x4 two foot wide going from stringer to stringer with a piece of 3/4" laminated to the front face to make a bulkhead

I have dried ply that i can lamimnate to duplicate the old one but i dont have any dry 4x4 posts laying around anywhere

I'd use laminated plywood using Titebond III glue. Stronger and more waterproof than dimensional.
